Kundli matching for marriage
Ashtakoot Guna Milan is the 36-point match from the Moon at each birth. Enter the date, clock time and place for the boy and the girl. The eight kootas are counted on this device.
Birth date, time and place stay in this browser. They are not saved and they are not sent to a server.
This is a traditional matching aid for families who use Guna Milan. It is not medical advice, not legal advice, and not a statement of destiny. A family priest may use another ayanamsa or extra cancellation rules.
What Ashtakoot Guna Milan counts
It counts eight kootas from the Moon only: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8. The sum is 36. The Moon sign (chandra rashi) and the birth star (nakshatra) come from the sidereal longitude, Lahiri ayanamsa.
The Moon here is geocentric, which is how North Indian matching tables are usually drawn. Birth place is used to read the clock in the right time zone. A score is shown only when the calculation returns a number. If it cannot, the page stops. It does not substitute a guess.
How to read the score out of 36
These bands are traditional guidance for the 36-point table, not a verdict. Below 18 is read as poor. From 18 up to (not including) 24 is average. From 24 up to (not including) 32 is good. 32 and above is excellent. A half point such as 23.5 stays in the lower band.
- poor. Below 18. Many families treat this as too low to proceed on guna alone.
- average. 18 up to 24. The traditional table calls this acceptable, not strong.
- good. 24 up to 32. The traditional table calls this a good match.
- excellent. 32 to 36. The traditional table calls this excellent.
The eight kootas
| Varna1 points | The traditional class of the two moon signs. Full point when the boy is the same or higher than the girl. |
|---|---|
| Vashya2 points | Whether the two moon signs are said to attract. One class is used per sign. Sagittarius and Capricorn are not split by degree. |
| Tara3 points | The star count each way, divided by 9. Remainder 3, 5 or 7 scores 0 for that direction. Any other remainder, including 1, scores 1.5. |
| Yoni4 points | The symbolic animal of each birth star. Same animal scores 4. The seven enemy pairs score 0. |
| Graha Maitri5 points | Natural friendship of the two moon-sign lords. Mutual friends score 5. The same lord scores 5. Mutual enemies score 0. |
| Gana6 points | Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa from the birth star. Same class scores 6. This page does not restore a low Gana score by a friendship rule. |
| Bhakoot7 points | The distance between the moon signs. 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score 0 unless the lords are the same or mutual friends. |
| Nadi8 points | Adi, Madhya or Antya. Different nadis score 8. The same nadi scores 0, unless the nakshatra is the same or the moon sign is the same. |
Varna and Vashya change if the boy and the girl are swapped. The other kootas are read both ways.

Questions families ask
Does kundli matching need a birth time?
Ashtakoot uses the Moon, and the Moon moves about one nakshatra a day. If the time is unknown and the Moon stays in the same nakshatra and moon sign for that whole calendar day, the 36 points are shown with a warning. If the Moon changes during the day, there is no score until a time is entered. The ascendant is never invented.
Are the birth details saved?
No. The date, time and place are used in this browser to count the guna and then discarded. They are not written to an account, because there is no account, and they are not sent to a server.
What does a score below 18 mean?
On the traditional 36-point bands used here, below 18 is poor, 18 up to 24 is average, 24 up to 32 is good, and 32 and above is excellent. The bands are guidance for families who already use Guna Milan. They are not a decision about the marriage.
Does this include Mangal dosha?
No. Mangal dosha needs the ascendant and the positions of Mars and other planets. This page does not calculate those. It is only the eight Ashtakoot kootas.
Why might a priest give a different total?
Ayanamsa, the half-sign vashya split, and which dosha cancellations are applied can move a point or two. This page uses Lahiri, one vashya class per moon sign, and cancels Bhakoot only when the moon-sign lords are the same or mutual friends. It cancels Nadi when the nakshatra is shared or the moon sign is shared. It does not use lagna, so lagna-based cancellations are not applied. Tara gives 1.5 for a direction unless the remainder is 3, 5 or 7.
